Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on Shopify: How to Display Them Per Product

If you sell chemicals, coatings, adhesives or industrial supplies, buyers expect the safety data sheet (SDS) on the product page. Here's how to attach an SDS to each Shopify product,...

Quick answer: attach each product's SDS as a PDF on its product page — either by hand-linking a file from Content > Files in the description, or with a document app that links SDS files to products and displays them in a theme app block. For catalogs with revisions and many shared sheets, the app route keeps sheets current without re-editing product pages.

Note: this is a how-to for publishing documents on Shopify, not regulatory advice — confirm your specific SDS obligations (e.g. GHS/OSHA/REACH requirements) with your compliance advisor.

Why SDS on the product page matters

  • B2B and industrial buyers often need the SDS before purchase — procurement teams check it during evaluation.
  • Distributors field repeated "can you send the SDS for X?" emails; a self-serve download deflects those tickets.
  • Sheets get revised. A stale PDF linked from a description keeps circulating outdated hazard information.

Option 1: Manual links (small catalogs)

  1. Upload the SDS PDF under Content > Files.
  2. Paste its link into the product description ("Download SDS").

Workable for a handful of products — but replacing a revised sheet changes the file URL and silently breaks existing links, and there's no way to search sheets by product number.

Option 2: A document app (revisions and scale)

  1. Install Compass Docs and create a Safety category.
  2. Upload SDS PDFs and link each sheet to its product — or one sheet to every product variant/family that shares it.
  3. Add the Documents app block to your product template in the theme editor; each product page now lists its SDS alongside manuals and spec sheets.
  4. With the search widget, buyers and staff can pull up a sheet by product title, SKU or product number.
  5. Use the coverage view to spot products that are missing their SDS.

Keeping sheets current

  • Keep one document per sheet and link it to all affected products — an update reaches every page without editing descriptions.
  • Name files with revision dates (e.g. SDS-AC1180-2026-05.pdf) so staff can verify currency at a glance.
  • Review the coverage report when adding new products so nothing ships without its sheet.

FAQ

Can customers search for an SDS by part number?

Yes — the Compass Docs search widget finds documents by product title, SKU or product number, which is how industrial buyers usually look them up.

What other documents belong on industrial product pages?

Technical datasheets, installation manuals, warranty terms and certificates — organize them in separate categories so buyers can tell them apart at a glance.
